About Caymont Ventures

Caymont Ventures is an early‑stage venture capital firm backing post‑revenue startups at moments of industry inflection. We invest where software, data, and intelligence reshape complex, asset‑heavy, or regulated markets. Our approach blends institutional discipline, hands‑on operating experience, and a distinctly Texas‑based perspective to uncover opportunities that are often overlooked.

This Substack is an extension of that work. It is where investing, operating, and writing intersect.

About Me

I’m Eric Alfuth, Managing Partner of Caymont Ventures and Chairman of the Houston Angel Network. I’ve spent my career at the intersection of finance, technology, and operating businesses, with a long‑standing curiosity about how industries change and what drives durable advantage.

I began my career in equity research at Prudential Securities before moving into portfolio management, including overseeing a multi‑billion‑dollar investment portfolio at AIG and later working at a distressed debt and special situations hedge fund. That institutional foundation shaped how I think about risk, incentives, and capital allocation.

After nearly a decade on Wall Street, I shifted to the operating side, serving as CFO of a public company and later as CFO in a McKinsey‑led restructuring engagement. Along the way, I helped raise private equity capital, navigated complex transactions, and operated businesses during periods of transition and uncertainty.

Following the sale of our last company, I launched Caymont Ventures to apply my institutional and operational background to investing in and supporting early‑stage companies.

Why I Write

This Substack serves a few purposes.

First, it is a place to share how I think about venture capital, company‑building, and industry inflection points. I write for founders, investors, operators, and anyone curious about how new ideas turn into durable businesses.

Second, it is a window into how we invest at Caymont Ventures. You will find perspectives on markets, technology shifts, founder dynamics, governance, and the often‑messy realities of building companies.

Finally, it is a platform to highlight the teams we back and the broader startup ecosystem.

The focus here is firmly on private markets, venture investing, and early‑stage company building. If you enjoy thoughtful analysis, long‑term thinking, and an inside view of how early‑stage investing actually works, you’re in the right place.
